Welcome to Montana Homestead Harvest!
Hi there! I'm Hilda, the voice behind Hilda's Kitchen Blog, where I share my passion for food, foraging, and living a self-sufficient lifestyle.
I was born in Iraq, grew up in the vibrant city of Chicago, and was stationed in sunny San Diego in 1985 while serving in the U.S. Navy. It's also where I got married to my husband, Scott, and raised two beautiful children, Nena and Scotty. I worked as a deputy sheriff until I injured my back, which led to my going to school to become a graphic/web designer.
In 2017, my husband and I took a leap and bought a gorgeous property in beautiful Northwest Montana. In 2020, we made the big move and started living here full-time - and we couldn't be happier with the change!
My love for food and nature has always been a driving force in my life. I'm an avid forager, collecting wild mushrooms, berries, and medicinal plants, which I use to make healing oils and salves.

I'm passionate about sustainability, and I have a huge garden where I grow a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Soon, I'll be adding a greenhouse to the mix, which will help me extend our growing season. I'm also a big fan of freeze-drying, which allows me to preserve the goodness of the harvest year-round.
At our little homestead, we have a small flock of chickens, including our soon-to-be-famous, one-legged hen, Peg! We also have two adorable rescue terriers, Winston and Holly, who are always up to some mischief.
On this blog, I share everything I've learned - from foraging tips to gardening advice and of course, plenty of delicious recipes that are inspired by my experiences in the kitchen and the wild. Whether you're into homesteading, cooking, or just looking for new recipes and tips, I hope you find something that inspires you!
Thanks for visiting, and I'm so glad you're here!
Warmly,
Hilda Sterner
